Thifaine Boucharel creates and rents magnificent historical costumes for men and women in her small workshop on Rue des Tables in Le Puy-en-Velay. This young woman, passionate about history and originally from Beaujolais, embarked on this dressmaking activity when she settled in Velay in 2022, after having made outfits for the Renaissance King of the Birds festival.

What inspired you to create historical costumes?

Thifaine Boucharel: Actually, I wanted to go to the King of the Birds Renaissance Festival, but no one in my family had the ability to create costumes, which was very frustrating for me! My mother challenged me to make one so that I could participate in the event.

Is that where it all started?

Thifaine Boucharel: Yes, because I've always been passionate about history. And then, I had a teacher in first grade who was the director of a medieval association. That's where it all started. I visited the Loire Valley châteaux, which allowed me to immerse myself in the Renaissance period. From there, I decided to create costumes. I started doing it in 2022 at home, before opening the workshop in August 2025.

And why in Le Puy-en-Velay?

Thifaine Boucharel: Because I've always been in love with the cathedral quarter. I find it magical! I really enjoy chatting with people, so I wanted to have a studio here, as it's a place people pass through. It's therefore very pleasant to welcome them to the studio.

What types of costumes do you make?

Thifaine Boucharel: I create historical costumes from all periods, but very few from the 17th and 18th centuries, and I also adapt to the requests I receive. I make costumes for men, women, and children. For example, I create dresses from the First and Second Empire periods and quite a few Renaissance costumes, as I did all my studies on that era. I also have a Master's degree in art history. I also create frock coats, overcoats, and corsets.

Who is your clientele?

Thifaine Boucharel: It's very varied! There are individuals, of course, but also groups that do historical reenactments. I also work with theaters and museums. Locally, quite a few people come to have a costume made for the King of the Birds festival. Otherwise, I have clients all over France, particularly around Metz, or near Rocamadour. I also make costumes for the Napoleon III festivals in Vichy, among other places.

Any projects?

Thifaine Boucharel: Yes! I'm trying to develop what I offer within the workshop. I'm trying to set up projects with castles or museums. I'm trying to innovate, because I don't like to rest on my laurels.
