An internationally renowned artist, Jean Dubuffet was born into a family of wine merchants and hesitated for a long time between a commercial and artistic career. It was not until 1942 that he devoted himself fully to painting. His production is marked by multiple experiments, organized into different cycles, the longest and most original of which is that of The Hourloupe (1962-1974), a mental and dematerialized projection of the world.

An exhibition to discover

Until November 2

A great challenger to the established order, he chose not to follow any pre-established rules throughout his forty years of creation. This approach was fueled by his interest in works on the fringes of cultural circuits, which led him to found the Compagnie de l'Art Brut. A free and independent spirit, he exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1962 and created his own foundation in 1974, to which he bequeathed all his personal archives, an inexhaustible source for understanding his extraordinary work.

The exhibition benefits from exceptional loans from the Dubuffet Foundation.

Since 2018, the Le Doyenné association has been in charge of exhibitions, with its goals of excellence, diversity, and sharing. Le Doyenné embodies a bridge between the past and the present, a truth that protects it from fashions and cultural conventions. This exceptional historic site has become a true space for transmitting cultural values: a magical place where major works encourage us to see differently, to observe others, and to listen to differences.

This ambitious desire to link art and history, in the heart of a modest but rich territory, far from major cultural centers, has been rewarded by an exceptional influx of visitors from the four corners of the world, thus contributing to the social and economic dynamism of the region.

Decentralized, lively and free, Le Doyenné believes deeply in its mission of cultural transmission, particularly among young audiences, especially school children, because diversity remains the fatal weapon against conformism, both in the arts and in our lives.

Since 2018, Le Doyenné de Brioude, a town of 7 inhabitants, has welcomed nearly 000 visitors.
