A key figure in the art of photography, Raymond Depardon has been casting a sensitive and compassionate eye on the world as an author and artist for over 60 years. From his early photojournalism to his portraits of rural areas, from private to public spaces, from black and white to color, the photographer presents a personal and intimate selection: 95 of his most striking images, showcasing his perspective on a world in motion. A priceless work in the extraordinary setting of the Abbaye de La Chaise-Dieu.
RAYMOND DEPARDON
French photographer, director, journalist and screenwriter
One of the most characteristic features of Raymond Depardon's photographic work is the assertion of the photographer's subjectivity and his desire to photograph "non-subjects," "dead times," in which he distances himself from the European school of humanist reportage of Cartier-Bresson and draws closer to the American school and photographers such as Walker Evans and Paul Strand. A fairly characteristic example is this set of photographs taken throughout France, entitled Depardon's France.
PLAYING MOMENTS
An immense source of inspiration for photographers of all generations, Paris in turn paid tribute to these photographers by highlighting, during the 2024 Olympic Games, legendary photographs by Raymond Depardon, taken during the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Mexico City, Munich and Montreal, between 1964 and 1976. These photographs were presented on giant prints (between 200 and 1 square meters) in the streets of Paris and around the Olympic sites, constituting the largest monumental open-air photographic trail ever created in a public space.
