The Polignac site is part of the volcanic basin of Puy-en-Velay which extends from Chaspinhac in the east to the volcanic massif of Devès in the west.
This ancient volcano was born under a lake which then occupied the Puy-en-Velay basin. Other nearby volcanoes like Cheyrac, Mount Denise were formed in the same way.
The platform of the fortress offers a device for observing volcanism in the landscape (paying access). The Charrirous path, around the rock, in the village, will invite you to observe the nearby volcanic landscape thanks to the interpretation tables (free, circuit leaflet available at the ticket office of the fortress).
The four hiking trails in the town will take you on short hiking trails equipped with volcanic interpretation panels. Bring the travel diary (fortress ticket office) which will guide you through the heritage of Polignac (paying diary: €2).
Label
Free volcanoes: a travel diary, interpretation panels (PR trails, Charrirous trail) and a digital circuit (lacemaker trail) await you.
