Eglise Saint-Eugénie

Parish church dedicated to Saint Eugenia, renovated in the 1980s.
Eugenie is a Roman virgin who suffered martyrdom in the time of Emperor Valerian. According to her "Passion", she was the daughter of Philip, governor of Alexandria. She disguised herself as a man in order to be able to enter a monastery of which she became abbot. Accused of having seduced a woman, she was called to appear before Governor Philippe, her father, and proved her innocence by revealing her identity. Her father converted but she had to return to live in a society that she influenced by her way of being and thinking. However, many were unhappy with this influence and sought to kill it in various ways (burning, drowning, starving), to no avail. Eventually, she was beheaded. Its symbol is the branch. Branch that she holds in her right hand (here it has disappeared).
Bonneval is a former priory of Benedictine nuns, known in 1177, under Lavaudieu. The first church was built in the XNUMXth century.
The central nave is flanked by four side chapels, added later. The nave, chancel, and chapels have ribbed vaults and keystones adorned with escutcheons (Gothic letters M). The stained-glass windows are of modern design. The bell tower-porch dates from 1908.
In 1993, murals were discovered on the chapel walls: a late XNUMXth century Crucifixion behind the statue of St Eugenie in the first chapel on the left as you enter. then in the next chapel, a representation of St Christopher carrying the Child Jesus (same period).
The altar table is a millstone from the Pissoux mill.
