Croix du Bancillon

Of classical Gothic architecture, classified as a Historic Monument in 1910, this granite cross was erected in 1541 and is isolated in the woods of Malvières which once depended on the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu.
The territory of Malvières is punctuated by numerous wayside crosses which evoke the deep Christian impregnation of the country.
The most beautiful is the “Croix du Bancillon” decorated with a Christ and a Virgin leaning against each other, and statuettes of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Jacques. The cross itself rests on a sort of small chapel which preserves a Virgin of Mercy.
Monument raised on a base almost 2 meters high.
Julius Caesar would have stopped there to admire the Livradois valley.
Ancient tradition that led girls wishing to marry to recite
“Our Lady of Bancillon, I don’t want cots or cotillons, I’m asking you for a handsome boy.”
