Chapelle des Reliques
Access to the chapel of relics is via the north aisle of the cathedral. This room occupies one of the upper floors of the so-called “machicolation” building built in the 12th century and which was the Chapter library.
In the chapel, one can admire a fresco on the Liberal Arts dating from the 15th century. During its restoration in the 19th century, Prosper Mérimée discovered the fresco incomplete, depicting 4 arts instead of 7: grammar, logic, rhetoric, and music.
The chapel's chancel is adorned with a beautiful 17th-century gilded altarpiece, upon which rests a copy of the Black Madonna sculpted by Philippe Kaeppelin based on the specifications provided by the geologist Faugeas de Saint-Fons. The original was burned on June 8, 1794, by revolutionaries.
