Based in Malrevers, a few kilometers from Le Puy-en-Velay, Joseph Lozano is one of the very few straw marquetry artists in France . For over 50 years, this craftsman has been transforming a simple and natural material – rye straw – into true works of art.
In his studio, he brings to life portraits, landscapes, scenes of daily life, and iconic monuments through a subtle interplay of light, reflections, and textures. Each creation is entirely handmade, using simple tools, showcasing a unique artisanal expertise in the Haute-Loire region.
A vocation born of chance

Joseph Lozano's career path is atypical. Originally from Algeria and having passed through Marseille, it was finally in Haute-Loire that he discovered straw marquetry, almost by accident:
“I saw a straw painting from Poland, and I wanted to reproduce it. When I bought my house in Malrevers, I found some rye straw… and that’s how it all started.”
Seduced by the calm, the landscapes and the quality of life of the territory, he chose to settle there permanently to develop his art.
Creations inspired by the heritage of Puy-en-Velay
Over the decades, Joseph Lozano has created a wide variety of works. Some are directly inspired by local heritage, such as:
This last piece, particularly remarkable, required more than 150 hours of work . He also focuses on depicting alleyways in the old town, characterful houses, and rural landscapes.
Each work begins with a photograph, reworked into a black and white drawing before being meticulously reconstructed in straw.

A unique artisanal technique
Unlike traditional straw marquetry, often made with dyed straw covering the entire surface, Joseph Lozano developed his own method:
- the use of natural, undyed straw
- work on black background to accentuate the contrasts
- precise cutting and placement using cutter and precision pliers
This process gives rise to luminous works, where the straw captures the light and reveals unique visual effects.

Custom orders and creations
Joseph Lozano also offers custom designs , particularly for houses or buildings of character. Stone constructions, typical of the region, provide a particularly aesthetically pleasing result.
Each project undergoes a preliminary study to ensure its feasibility. Deadlines and prices vary depending on the complexity of the work and the time required for completion.
