Antonina, Anna, Ettel, Fernande. Their voices span time to question us again. They speak as daughters, mothers, sisters, women of July 16 and 17, 1942.
Incredulous, combative, resistant in turn, they confront the arbitrariness and madness of a combined double authoritarianism: Nazism and French collaborationism.
The roundups, including that of Vel' d'Hiv, will open the way to deportation and the final solution. Letters, administrative orders, fragments of life are intertwined in Vel' d'Hiv. We can only try to get closer, try to hear better to better warn. The voices of these women commit us to endless vigilance, they quite simply oblige us. Remembering is never enough.
