An outdated expression that may seem a little sexist but which hides a feminist and rewarding history.
Often wrongly attributed to Guy Lux, the host of Intervilles, it actually refers to Simone Louise de Pinet de Borde, a famous racing and rally driver from the 30s to the 50s. It was her fame (and her sporty driving) that gave rise to the expression: "in the car Simone, you're the one driving, I'm the one honking."
A true pioneer, she was one of the first French women to have a driving license, in 1929, at just 19 years old.
With “En voiture Simone!” we also refer to Simone de Beauvoir and Simone Veil, two women who fought for women.
